The French Revolutionary Wars are raging. Sofia is a young Italian woman braving the dangerous front lines to reach Santa Restituta in Naples. Unarmed and aided only by her intractable pet donkey, her mysterious task seems impossible. Lyam is a French soldier in Napoleon's army, invading Italy. When he gets word that his brother is dying, he abandons his post to cross the unfamiliar countryside and reunite with his family.

When the pair cross paths, they form a tentative and unlikely friendship. But can they protect each other when enemy soldiers track Lyam? Will Sofia abandon her new friend? And what could be so important that she would even risk such a treacherous trip?
