Jakob thinks coming to America and reuniting with his beautiful Rachel after a year of separation will be a dream come true, but a whole new set of struggles are about to begin.

Jakob quickly realizes the streets aren’t lined with gold, and that he needs a way to pay off the shopping bills he racked up his first day in America. Another cruel reality is learning people who don’t quite fit in aren’t always treated very nicely.

Rachel, once so eager to reunite with Jakob and finally have a proper wedding, is now overcome with insecurities about their relationship. She and Jakob are little more than strangers, married far longer than they’ve properly known one another.

Just when it seems her heart is no longer in turmoil, a new struggle arises—finding a midwife in a country where hospital birth has become the norm. Her quest isn’t helped by the conformist young wives’ social club she’s been roped into joining, full of women who hate everything about her.

But no matter what happens, Jakob and Rachel have one another, just as their Biblical namesakes did.
